Ah, the beauty of social media (we're obviously fans). The latest in music sharing has finally arrived in the States after much anticipation: Spotify. Spotify is the newest application available in the U.S. market, with over 15 million songs available, where users can share playlists with coworkers, friends and family and stream virtually any song or album on their computers and mobile devices. So, like Rhapsody, you don't really "own" the songs, but can create a playlist that can be saved, shared and listened to instantly. Spotify also connects to your friends via social media, so why not try and have your playlist go viral? It's like stealing, but it isn't!
The service is free for basic users, but includes advertisements and limited streaming of music. You'll have to cough up some money each month for the Premium plan which includes: no advertisements, unlimited streaming of music, access to the mobile device and the ability to listen to your playlists in "Offline Mode". Also, unbeknownst to many users, you must have the premium plan to access 320 Kbps tracks, which is the highest possible quality. This has some doubting the system altogether, with arguments that the business model ultimately won't work and that it acts as a bait-and switch strategy, citing Netflix as an example of how customer loyalty can plummet.
What do you think? Have you signed up for Spotify yet? Leave a message below!
